Course Type:

Foundational Courses (Level 1) - HT10604 - 1.5 Credits

This course provides an overview of the 2000 plus year history of the Christian church in chronological order and in themes or patterns within the history. Reflective of the trends within the field of Christian history, students will explore Western church history, the history of Christianities, including global perspectives, and the various voices of critical histories regarding social and postcolonial histories. The course seeks to balance the “grand narrative” approach to history with a nuanced approach taking into account the various voices and narratives that come together to create a stronger, broader, and bolder understanding of the Christian faith across time, culture, and space.

Learning Objectives

  • To identify and describe the major trajectories of Christian history.
  • To explain major themes and patterns across Christian history.
  • To identify major figures and events in Christian history.
  • To name one’s own Christian historical identity.
  • To grow in awareness and respect for one’s own tradition within the Christian story while also identifying and understanding other traditions within Christianity.
  • To explore avenues for explaining and discussing Christian history in the context of one’s setting for ministry.

Because classes are not bound by geography and have a flexible weekly schedule, PATHWAYS courses are able to fit into the rest of your busy life. Courses typically involve weekly readings and discussion in a facilitated online forum, offering practical, open-minded education and a learner-centered environment where participants can bring their own questions and insights.

Our courses have between 4 and 15 participants. This allows for deep and productive discussions in the online forum. We know that a small class size allows the participants to develop learning relationships with each other and for facilitators to push participants to a more indepth learning experience.
