Ethics and a Life of Meaning
Foundational Courses (Level 1) -TH10608 - 1.5 Credits
This course uses two complementary texts, one which brings together clear, comprehensible ethical theory and goals; and the other text introduces an ethical approach which bridges ethical theories with down-to-earth ethical situations in today’s world. These two texts will provide a strong, practical ethics background. Participants will be able to identify moral dimensions of ethical issues, describe multiple moral stances related to these issues, and formulate thoughtful and faithful responses to these issues, shaped by individual, communal, and broad UCC values.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and discuss the-ethical issues and values involving nurturing,care and compassion for God’s creation.
- Recognize and explain issues of injustice and oppression in participant’s own communities and in the broader world using scripture and Jesus’ life and teachings.
- Discover realities that exclude persons and communities from lives of thriving; and illustrate ways of radical hospitality.
- Distinguish between decisions, structures, policies that promote human dignity or “the good life” and those that diminish human dignity.
- Identifying one’s own lenses and how that shapes how we approach issues in the church.
- Apply different moral perspectives to real stories and real issues
